Baby Boomers and the MHealth Technology
A recent study was made in preparation for the MIT Enterprise Forum which will be held in Seattle this January 19th 2011. The working hypothesis of the research is that aging US baby boomers would drive technology innovation across many areas. The result of more than 50 interviews found that boomers would have a considerable effect on one area and that is the adoption of tech-enabled health and wellness products for their own use.
Baby boomers, ages 46-64, are different from the other generation simply because they have been forefront in some of the most significant innovations in technology. Unlike the older generation who are not only hesitant about using technology but even unwilling to learn, the baby boomers are enthusiastic about receiving and using technology. According to the report, they view health products enabled by technology as a way to foster control and ongoing independence, especially when these gadgets can help reduce cost. They are willing to learn and use monitoring devices at home together with the care of their doctors.
We also have to consider that a number of economic, generational and societal factors combine to make boomers more adaptable and more likely to use these medical and health applications. These days, the economic situation of boomers make it a huge reason for them to continue being in their work clothes long after their retirement age. There are even cases of retired people going back to work because they need to. It might be that they have children still living with them or parents who need care.
These days people choose instead to look for assisted living facilities where older loved ones are getting the personal care they need for some activities they have a hard time doing. Nursing homes are chosen for seniors who need help from those in a nursing uniform to care for their medical needs. Boomers on the other hand would rather manage their own health information and conditions and they would not want to relinquish their independence and these medical apps will certainly help them out. There are now hospitals and facilities that offer medical home initiative or patient-centric approach where the emphasis is on the patients manage their data using devices. While before there were only single-purpose devices, now there are medical mobile applications that can do so much more such as monitor health-critical biometric data.
These medical applications allows boomers to continue being in their work clothes without worries and fears. Years before, people their age would need to be constantly going to the hospital or ask a person in nursing uniform to check this and that. The tech-enable medical and health products as well as mobile medical applications give them the independence they are known for. They will be able to do the things they need or love to do as long as they know how to use these products. Boomers have been in on almost all the technological innovations in the last 40 years and they are the ones benefiting from it, too. Boomers are expected to make a great impact on the rise of mhealth technology especially since they will be the ones to benefit from this.
